Two Zodiacs, Two Traditions

The word "zodiac" comes from the Greek zōidiakos kyklos, the "circle of little animals" β€” the band of constellations the Sun appears to pass through over a year. Many cultures developed their own ways of linking birth dates to symbols. This calculator covers the two best known: the Western zodiac of twelve sun signs and the Chinese zodiac of twelve animals with five elements. Both are cultural traditions rather than science, and we present them for fun and curiosity.

The Western zodiac

Western astrology divides the year into twelve signs of roughly 30 days each, starting with Aries at the March equinox. Your "sun sign" is the sign the Sun was in on the day you were born. Each sign is linked to one of four classical elements:

ElementSigns
πŸ”₯ FireAries, Leo, Sagittarius
🌍 EarthTaurus, Virgo, Capricorn
πŸ’¨ AirGemini, Libra, Aquarius
πŸ’§ WaterCancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Sign boundaries can shift by a day from year to year because the calendar year and the solar year are not exactly the same length. If you were born on the first or last day of a sign (a "cusp"), the exact time of your birth determines which sign astrologers assign.

Why your sign may not match the stars

The sign dates were fixed about 2,000 years ago. Since then, the slow wobble of Earth's axis β€” called the precession of the equinoxes β€” has shifted the constellations by almost a full sign. Astronomers also note that the Sun passes through a thirteenth constellation, Ophiuchus, in late November and early December. Western astrology deliberately uses the fixed "tropical" signs tied to the seasons, not the constellations' current positions.

The Chinese zodiac

The Chinese zodiac (shΔ“ngxiΓ o) assigns an animal to each year in a twelve-year cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. It combines with five elements β€” Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water β€” each lasting two consecutive years, producing a full sixty-year cycle. 2024 was the year of the Wood Dragon, 2025 the Wood Snake and 2026 the Fire Horse.

Because the Chinese zodiac year begins at the Lunar New Year β€” which falls between January 21 and February 20 β€” people born in January or early February often belong to the previous year's animal. The calculator highlights this when it applies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is my zodiac sign?

Enter your date of birth above. The calculator shows your Western sun sign, its element and dates, plus your Chinese zodiac animal and element.

What is a cusp?

A cusp is the boundary day between two signs. Because sign start dates shift slightly between years, people born on these days may need their exact birth time to determine their sign.

Why is my Chinese zodiac different from my birth year's animal?

The Chinese zodiac year starts at the Lunar New Year, between January 21 and February 20. If you were born before that date, you belong to the previous year's animal.

Is astrology scientific?

No. Controlled studies have not found that zodiac signs predict personality or life events. Astrology is best enjoyed as a cultural tradition and a source of fun conversation.
