How Generations Are Defined
A generation is a group of people born in roughly the same period who experienced similar historical events, technologies and cultural shifts at similar ages. Generational labels are not official categories โ no government decides them โ and researchers use slightly different cut-off years. This calculator uses the boundaries published by the Pew Research Center for Baby Boomers through Generation Z, which are among the most widely cited, together with commonly used ranges for the Silent Generation, Generation Alpha and Generation Beta.
| Generation | Birth years | Shaped by |
|---|---|---|
| Greatest Generation | 1901โ1927 | Great Depression, World War II |
| Silent Generation | 1928โ1945 | Post-war rebuilding, early television |
| Baby Boomers | 1946โ1964 | Post-war birth boom, economic growth |
| Generation X | 1965โ1980 | Personal computers, MTV, end of the Cold War |
| Millennials | 1981โ1996 | Arrival of the internet, 2008 financial crisis |
| Generation Z | 1997โ2012 | Smartphones and social media from childhood |
| Generation Alpha | 2013โ2024 | Tablets, streaming, the COVID-19 pandemic |
| Generation Beta | 2025โ2039 | AI and automation as everyday tools |
Why the cut-off years differ
Baby Boomers are the only generation with boundaries rooted in hard data โ the sharp rise and fall in birth rates in the United States between 1946 and 1964. Other boundaries are set by researchers based on shared formative experiences. Pew, for instance, ended the Millennial generation in 1996 partly because people born after that were too young to clearly remember the September 11, 2001 attacks and grew up with smartphones as the norm. Other organisations place the boundaries a year or two earlier or later.
Cuspers and micro-generations
People born within a couple of years of a boundary often identify with both neighbouring generations. These "cuspers" have their own popular nicknames: Xennials (roughly 1977โ1983) had an analogue childhood and a digital adulthood, while Zillennials (roughly 1993โ1998) sit between Millennials and Gen Z. The calculator flags you as a cusper if your birth year is within two years of a boundary.
A word of caution
Generational labels describe broad trends, not individuals. Differences within a generation โ by country, income, education and personal circumstance โ are often larger than the differences between generations. Use them as a fun lens for conversation rather than a prediction of anyone's personality.
